Illinois Leadership Camp has arrived and gone. The chapter was able to send four members, Delyn Marshall, Jalyne Herren, Sara Glab, and Cody Wrobel to the four day camp. The purpose of the camp was to focus on what a leader is, and the qualities that go with it. “We came as strangers. We leave as one”...
Day marked the arrival into camp. Upon arriving, members settled into their cabin, and then went out to find their groups. No SLS member was in the same group or cabin. This meant members had to settle in a group of complete strangers. Once members found their groups, they had about two hours to talk and introduce themselves, as they waited for other group members to show up. After the short time of introducing and talking, groups where put to the test of trust, communication, and basic leadership. They where being taken out to the camps “Challenge Course”. At the course, each group was assigned a station for 30mins, then rotated. One of the stations consisted of climbing a vertical wall of 15ft. To do this, group members on the ground lifted the climber as high as they could. At the top of this wall was another member who pulled up the climber once in range. Once the climber was pulled over, that climber became the “puller”. This cycle repeated over until the whole group was over the wall. Other activities included a 5ft trust fall into the groups arms, members getting in order of middle name silently on a service pole, roping across an area, and lifting members through a spiderweb of bungie cords. After group bonding on the course, groups headed back to the main camp area and enjoyed some group time. During this time, groups talked about the course, and who they are. Dinner was served after. Following dinner was a camp meeting. Clayton Carley presented a keynote about camp, and how its new beginnings. He explained how we all come as strangers, and leave as friends. With Clayton giving his motivational speech kicking off camp, camp members headed off to do reflections. During reflections, camp staff talked about the days activities, opportunities, and what leaders possess. After, campers headed back to their cabins for the night.
